Facilitation and Design

Aim: The Children’s Law Center (CLC) wanted to ensure that a program was best-designed to meet client needs and to have results about its true impact to share.

Actions: I first gathered input on the program through interviews with a variety of stakeholders.  Weaving in this data along with program data and literature review findings, I facilitated a process for the team to develop program outcomes and a logic model.  The facilitation and design process moved from there into a thorough review of the current program and an in-depth revising of the program to align with the newly-articulated outcomes and model.  Emerging from that process, I facilitated the team developing its evaluation framework.  And I took the lead on creating the main data collection instruments that captured both the process of implementing the program and the program’s progress toward its desired outcomes.

Assessment and Evaluation

Aim: The United Steelworkers’ Tony Mazzocchi Center (TMC) needed an in-depth picture of various industries to determine how to leverage worker health and safety improvements.

Actions:  In partnership with my fabulous colleagues Tobi Lippin (New Perspectives Consulting Group) and Tom McQuiston (TMC) and teams of union staff and industrial workers, we conducted many participatory assessments and evaluations.  Project steps included:  designing projects, developing surveys and focus group guides, coordinating nation-wide data collection, completing data analysis and interpretation, and creating products ranging from presentations to peer-reviewed journal articles.  Grounded in participatory methods, we focused significantly on facilitating the process; training team members in evaluation approaches, instrument development, data collection, and data interpretation; and surfacing and valuing the expertise and perspectives of each member. 

Capacity Building

Aim: The Office of Population Affairs’ Male Training Center for Family Planning (MTC) sought to strengthen family planning and reproductive health service organizations’ program effectiveness and focus on results and related reporting.

Actions: In a training and support setting, I worked with managers of these organizations from across the country to build their capacities around how to: develop outcomes, build programs and services strategically designed to achieve their outcomes, and evaluate their services.  I also provided overall facilitation of MTC Capacity Building Institutes to build connective tissue among various capacity areas, to enhance the sense of community among participants, and to conduct real-time evaluation to inform future training.

Materials Development

Aim: The National Cancer Institute needed effective education and support materials for loved ones serving as caregivers for people at various stages of cancer. 

Actions: Drawing on the literature, an advisory group of researchers, focus group data, and my background in health behavior, I crafted three guides.  Written in a warm, conversational style, these guides feature a combination of practical ideas, stories, tools, and additional resources.
